Two Responses Needed on Mark Driscoll Issue

Mark Driscoll 2While Christian bloggers — including myself — have run with the story of Mark Driscoll’s plagiarism and strategic placement on the New York Times bestseller list, and while the Twitterverse continues, even as I type this, to have updates every few minutes, two important voices have not been heard.

First, the New York Times Book Review itself has had nothing to say about what Christian media considers a scandal. One story today quotes a member of the Mars Hill Church Board of Advisers and Accountability as saying that the practice is “not uncommon.” Otherwise, the Los Angeles Times is one of the few general market media outlets that has run a report.

Second, there has been no response from mainstream industry (trade) media such as Publisher’s Weekly or The American Bookselling Association (ABA) Bookselling This Week news page.

So…Is this a tempest in a teapot or did the Mars Hill spokesperson nail it when they said the practice is widespread; that outside our Evangelical bubble, this just isn’t news?
