Carrying Product Outside the Lines

In our store, we’ve noticed that often when we carry product that’s a little outside the boundaries of what Christian bookstores normally carry, people simply don’t expect us to have that particular item and so it often doesn’t work.

We were walking out of Chapters in Oshawa on Sunday and I noticed they had a display of Malcolm Gladwell’s book David and Goliath and I remarked to my wife that after hearing the TEDTalk he did, I’d really like to read this alternative interpretation of the story. We tend to think of David as the underdog in the story, but apparently he had several advantages going in, not to mention that we usually also like to note that God was on his side.

I checked around to see who among the distinctively Christian retail and wholesale companies carries this title in the U.S.:

Mardel no
Family Christian no
Lifeway no
Send the Light no
CBD e-book only

I’m not sure why this is. Maybe there’s other things in the book I’m not aware of, but I think I would consider this when it comes out in paperback, or if it ever landed on a remainder site. Meanwhile it’s available in hardcover from Ingram at $29 US, 320 pages; 9780316204361.

…If you watched the video and are interested in other alternative interpretations of very familiar stories, check out this article I wrote about a chapter in a Gary Burge book published by Zondervan.
