Are Music Departments a Thing of the Past?

The above is the featured music page of a large Toronto Christian bookstore. Last week we were told that in a couple of larger stores in Western Canada you have to strain to see the music department. Music sales have been declining for years, but are we now witnessing the beginning of the end?

It turned out that several of the pages at this particular store’s website looked like this, but it helped illustrate the story and got your attention, right?

If the CDs aren’t going to sell anymore, then I’ve got plans for those shelves after Christmas.

That may be our bookstore (Faith Family Books) that you made the comment about so let me say that our music and DVD (movies) business is as good as ever. Our web site has a problem loading covers so we decided to keep the Special Sale in the store “only!” But we are having a good sale on music which goes till next week. There are a lot of problems with the “book store” model but we have been finding new ways to respond to the challenges and believe that there is still a place for them. But there is much work to do in this transition period.
Sorry for the bad covers on the web site. I hope to have that fixed next week.

Again, it helped illustrate the story even after we realized it was a website anomaly. Your music department results certainly are the exception, from what we’re hearing.
