Do You Cut Back, Or Try To Maximize Opportunities?

Warning: This article isn’t what you think it’s going to be about.

So sales aren’t what they were a few years ago, some key customers have disappeared, and survival seems linked to keeping a very strong watch on expenses.  Do you cut back on hours, or do you push yourself to be available to the greatest number of customers?

I’m talking about suppliers who shut their doors and switchboard at 4:30 EST.

There’s obviously another type of wisdom at work.

I know I’ve done this rant before, but 4:30 EST is only 1:30 on the west coast. Only 2:30 in Calgary and Edmonton. There’s a lot of ‘business’ you simply can’t do online. Arrange for special shipping. Negotiate a better discount. Get an ETA on a backordered item. Clarify a database ambiguity. Make any kind of special request.

I know people in Ontario want to get home to their supper and their family. I totally get that. But even 9:30 to 5:30 EST makes more sens than 8:30 to 4:30. 9:30 AM EST is 10:30 in Atlantic Canada, I’ll grant you, but it’s a small compromise for Maritime dealers that would greatly benefit their brothers and sisters in Western Canada.

Or at least keep a skeleton staff on the order desk.

Or something.

Something better than the status quo.

Especially in the 12 weeks before Christmas.

Excellent thoughts here paul. Appreciate your concerns for us out west. Yes, its often frustrating with the time change and eastern suppliers being closed by our time 1:30 pm
